Content Consulting

Content consulting

Everything should be as simple as it can be, but not simpler.

- Albert Einstein, paraphrased

by composer Roger Sessions

As your organization or offerings grow, you might find that your blossoming content has developed the character of an untended garden: there are some gems  in there, but there are also some weeds and some empty spots, and the thicker it all grows, the harder it is to wrangle into shape! I work with you to determine what needs pulling, what needs pruning, and what needs to grow free, and I set you up with the tools to keep things healthy and productive.

My work is informed by my deep background in education and in nonprofit program work. My clients include non-profits, education organizations, publishers, and creative individuals.

Cottage Door Press

Content development

I developed a school-based English as Foreign Language language program for children ages 7 to 10 based on an animated online story. I loved combining my knowledge of language acquisition, pedagogy, and Spanish as well as English to develop creative, fun exercises within the constraints of the workbook format.

Latino Cultural Center at UIC

Content consulting, content development

I developed a dialogue facilitation guide suitable for use by external organizations based on the Latino Cultural Center's internal guide and institutional knowledge. This project was an excellent example of my knack for converting the wisdom and expertise developed within in an organization into a complete and coherent program geared toward a new audience.

College Greenlight

Concept consulting, content consulting, content development

I developed a manual to help college counselors at community-based organizations and schools use software to help first-generation college students through the college application process. In this role I:

  • Helped my clients unpack the problem they wanted to solve and define the solution through relevant research and good questions

  • Created a schedule, budget, and content framework

  • Hired a graphic designer and a copyeditor

  • Developed content with both the end-user experience and the client's priorities in mind.

YMCA of Metro Chicago

Communications editing/writing

I wrote and edited whatever came at me: e-blasts, fact sheets, bios, press releases, reports, scripts and speeches, social media, and more! This busy department was the marketing and communications hub for twenty-two community Ys, five camps, and dozens of extension sites around Chicagoland.

Reach Out and Read

Program outreach and coordination, content consulting, content development

I coordinated a new high school initiative for the Illinois chapter of nationwide nonprofit Reach Out and Read. Reach Out and Read works to close the school-readiness gap by working with pediatricians and family physicians to promote language, literacy, and brain development in low income children, from infancy through preschool.

The Readathon idea was pioneered by a Chicago teacher in 2015-2016, and was so successful that Reach Out and Read Illinois chose to pilot the program city-wide. I had the pleasure of building the pilot from the ground up.

In this role, I:

  • create new instructional materials and revise existing materials

  • develop and carry out an outreach plan to bring in new teachers and partners

  • develop communications with stakeholders, the public, and the press

  • create instructional materials for teachers in collaboration with Mariana Guzman, ROR-IL's lead physician

Scenarios USA

Program outreach and coordination, content consulting, line editing, content development

I served as a project manager, outreach coordinator, and editor for Scenario USA's state-of-the-art social-emotional health curriculum in Chicago. Scenarios USA  uses writing and film in the classroom to engage young people on issues of social justice, identity and health.

In my capacity as an educational content consultant, I:

  • provided a developmental edit focused on ensuring pacing, organization, and standards alignment.

  • contributed to the development of a half-day professional development training focusing on three social-justice linked themes.

  • line edited a thirteen-lesson inquiry-based curriculum for grades 6–12

  • created and presented customized information sessions for stakeholders

In my capacity as a project manager, I:

  • conducted multi-tiered outreach, almost doubling the number of schools with committed teachers in comparison with prior pilot cycle

  • cultivated new relationships with classroom and community educators and administrators, and rekindled earlier partnerships

  • aided in coordination and communications for film premiere event drawing 200 attendees
